EATING DISORDER

THERAPY

At the Body Liberation Collective, we work with adolescents and adults across the disordered eating and eating disorder spectrum. This includes those who have a fraught relationship with food and their body and have never received a diagnosis, or do not meet the criteria for an eating disorder. We also see individuals who have been formally diagnosed with Binge Eating Disorder, Bulimia Nervosa, Anorexia Nervosa, Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), or Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders (OSFED).

What we offer

Our skilled team of clinicians provide individual, one-on-one psychotherapy. Family sessions are incorporated if necessary. We typically recommend meeting 1-2 times per week initially, but are open to discussing frequency options based on your needs. Our sessions are 50 minutes long. We also offer supplemental meal support services for those in eating disorder recovery.

We do not focus solely on symptom reduction.

We believe that all coping is wise and that eating disorders often develop as a form of survival. We will never pathologize you or your symptoms. Rather, we will help you identify the ways in which the eating disorder has served you (i.e. emotional numbing, coping with difficult life situations, regulating emotions, etc.), and also support you in finding alternative ways to get your needs met.

We take a holistic approach.

You are so much more than the behaviors you use or symptoms you struggle with. We focus on understanding all the nuances of your experience and help you build an overall sense of trust in yourself.

Our therapy is politically informed.

We take an intersectional lens to understanding our clients’ struggles. We feel that you cannot adequately support a person’s healing by focusing solely on individual behavior change, and must take into account the impact of dominant white culture, oppression and lived experience.

We consider you part of the treatment team.

We do not believe in making decisions about you without you. At times, we may need to discuss the need for a higher level of care, such as intensive outpatient, inpatient or residential treatment. However, while we may make this recommendation, the decision to go is always made collaboratively.

We utilize harm reduction strategies.

We do not see recovery as black and white, and support clients in making decisions that best suit their vision of recovery. We are aware of the limitations of “gold standard” eating disorder approaches and believe there is no right way to recover.

We honor body diversity.

Eating disorders affect people of every race, ability, size, gender, sexuality and income level. However, those who are most marginalized often go undiagnosed due to limited access to resources, as well as misconceptions and stereotypes of what it "looks like" to have an eating disorder. We work with clients across the weight spectrum and never make assumptions about their struggles. We recognize that a higher weight person can be weight suppressed and may need to restore weight regardless of their BMI (which is a measure we consider BS, by the way).
